India, Nepal update treaty of transit for rail freight

India

India and Nepal have updated their Treaty of Transit (as of November 13, 2025) to make rail freight between the two countries way easier.
Now, bulk goods can move more freely between places like Jogbani (India) and Biratnagar (Nepal), thanks to a broader definition of what counts as "freight."
Key routes—like Kolkata-Jogbani, Kolkata-Nautanwa (Sunauli), and Visakhapatnam-Nautanwa (Sunauli)—now benefit from enhanced liberalization, allowing for faster and more efficient trade.

What was agreed upon

This update was sealed in New Delhi by India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Nepal's Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Anil Kumar Sinha.
The goal? Stronger economic ties, quicker cargo movement, and better access for Nepali businesses—not just with India but beyond.
Since India is already Nepal's biggest trade partner, these changes are expected to give a real boost to both economies.
