What's the story

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has emphasized that India's relations with its neighbors should be based on mutual interests. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum, he said, "What I can tell you is for any relationship to work, it has to meet the test of mutual interest." He added that both sides must respect each other's interests for smooth relations.

Bilateral relations

India-Bangladesh relations

Jaishankar's comments come amid tensions in India-Bangladesh relations, including Dhaka's demand for the extradition of former PM Sheikh Hasina.

The minister didn't divulge details about ongoing talks but said both countries need to find common ground.

He stressed that India's invitation to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for a bilateral visit and BRICS Summit participation is seen as important for efforts to reset India-Bangladesh ties.

Regional tensions

India's ties with Pakistan

Jaishankar also addressed India's strained ties with Pakistan, citing public sentiment over terrorism.

He said Indians feel Pakistan "does not empathize with us, does not understand our point of view" on terrorism.

On improving Pakistan-US relations, he noted the US-Pakistan history but singled out Pakistan for its systematic use of terrorism against India.
