India strikes 1st-ever natural gas find in Andaman basin

India

India has made its first-ever natural gas discovery in the Andaman basin, about 17km off the islands' east coast.
Announced by Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, this find at the Sri Vijayapuram-2 well revealed gas with a high methane content—pretty big news for a region that hadn't confirmed hydrocarbons before.

Find could help India reduce energy imports

Experts say this basin could hold enough gas to potentially double India's current output—think 307-370 million metric tons of oil-equivalent fuel.
While it'll take over a decade to actually get this energy flowing into homes and industries, it's a major step toward more energy independence, cleaner fuel options, and maybe even some cool international collaborations down the line.
