India to open up nuclear energy sector to private players
India is gearing up for a major shift in its nuclear energy policy with the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025.
The bill, now up for debate in Parliament, aims to let private companies and state governments join the nuclear power scene—something only central government firms could do until now.
The goal is to make it easier for new players by sorting out tricky issues like liability and fuel supply.
Why this matters: big plans for clean energy
With these changes, India wants to boost its nuclear capacity 10-fold by 2047, using both large reactors and smaller modular ones (SMRs) for different needs.
This move is all about meeting rising energy demands while keeping things cleaner and more high-tech.
If it goes through, we could see a lot more innovation in the country's growing clean energy sector.
