India to slow down renewable energy auctions for next 2 years

India

India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is slowing down the pace of new renewable energy auctions for the next two years.
India is offering more renewable energy than the grid can currently absorb, so MNRE wants to address stalled projects—especially those without Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)—before moving forward.

Focus on energy storage and better grid connections

Instead of rushing ahead, the focus will shift to making sure future projects are better connected and designed, with a special look at adding energy storage.
MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said some projects might be re-bid with these upgrades.
Industry leaders like Tata Power's CEO are backing this move, saying it'll help make renewable power more reliable.
Even with this slowdown, India still has a strong 160 GW pipeline and is on track for its 2030 clean energy targets.
