India wants a bigger say at the UN, calls for Security Council upgrade

India

Marking the UN's 80th anniversary, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told world leaders it's time for an "objective report card" on how the UN is doing.
He called out a crisis in the organization and pushed for more countries—like India—to get permanent and non-permanent seats on the Security Council.
Jaishankar also said India is ready to step up if given more responsibility.

Why should you care?

The push has big support: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says these changes would make the Security Council "more representative, transparent, and effective."
With wars still raging in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar—and $1.6 billion in unpaid UN dues—many feel it's clear: today's global problems need a Security Council that actually reflects today's world.
