Indian Railways sets record ₹1.3 lakh crore safety budget for FY27

India

Indian Railways is stepping up its safety game, considering a record ₹1.3 lakh crore budget for 2026-27—a ~12% jump from this year.
This move follows a tragic train collision in Bilaspur earlier this year that took 11 lives.
The extra funds will go into renewing tracks, upgrading signals, maintaining trains, and expanding the Kavach automatic braking system to more route kilometers across its massive network.

Why should you care?

Nearly half of Railways's total spending next year will focus on keeping passengers safe—a big deal for anyone who travels or cares about public transport.
Thanks to efforts like Kavach (already active on 1,465 route kilometers and 121 locomotives), accidents per million train kilometers have dropped by 73% since 2015.
With more investment and tech upgrades on the way, Indian Railways is aiming to make journeys safer for everyone—whether it's your daily commute or a cross-country adventure.
