Indian Railways trials automatic doors for safety

Big changes are coming to Mumbai's local trains—soon, non-AC coaches will have automatic doors and much better ventilation. This upgrade aims to make daily commutes safer and more comfortable for the 80 lakh people who rely on these trains every day. The move follows a tragic accident in Thane and comes after urgent talks between railway officials and the Integral Coach Factory. First prototype rolls out by November 2025.

TL;DR

What changes to expect

Expect louvered automatic doors (so no more risky footboard rides) and roof-mounted ventilators to keep things breezy, even when it's crowded. Vestibules will connect coaches for safer movement during rush hour. Plus, 238 AC local trains with automatic doors are also being built for Mumbai.

Hope for safer travel

Overcrowding and unsafe travel have been big worries for years—these upgrades could finally change that. If this works well in Mumbai, other metro cities might get similar improvements too, potentially making train travel safer all around India.
