What's the story

A Delhi court has summoned a man for smoking during a video conference proceeding on Wednesday. The incident has prompted the court to seek an explanation from him as to why disciplinary action shouldn't be taken against him. District Judge Shiv Kumar has asked Sushil Kumar to appear in person at the next hearing on March 29.

Court disruption

Disruptive behavior during proceedings

He was first noticed on his phone while the proceedings were on, disrupting them. Despite court warnings to refrain from doing so, he ignored them. To stop him from causing more disturbance, his mic was muted during the video call. However, things took a turn when a court staff member saw him smoking when an order was being dictated.

Disrespectful conduct

Judge Kumar disapproves of the behavior

Smoking in the middle of a live court hearing, while being filmed, was a grave violation of court decorum. On being asked about his conduct, Kumar apologized and assured that he won't repeat such misconduct in future hearings. Even after Kumar's apology, the judge considered it fit to issue a formal notice and summon him for further explanation.

Disciplinary action

Formal notice issued to Kumar

The court was hearing a matter related to the probate of a will when the incident took place. "Sushil Kumar is directed to remain present in the court on March 29 and file his explanation as to why action should not be taken against him for smoking on the VC during court proceedings," Judge Kumar ordered.
