Low-pressure area likely over Bay of Bengal; heavy rain expected
Heads up, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry! Expect heavy rainfall over the next 24-48 hours as a low-pressure area forms over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21, 2025.
The weather department is warning of intense showers in hilly districts like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni, and Tenkasi.
Chennai and nearby areas could see some thunderstorms and moderate rain too.
Fishermen warned to stay ashore
The North-East Monsoon has been going strong since October 16, already bringing steady rain—Nilgiris's Kothagiri just got drenched with 14cm in one day.
This new low-pressure system could turn into a depression by October 23 and bring squally winds up to 55km/h along the southern coast.
Fishermen have been told to stay ashore until at least the morning of October 21 to avoid rough seas.
Given the forecast of heavy rain and strong winds, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts.
