Major Indian airports to get anti-drone systems soon
What's the story
For the first time, major Indian airports such as Delhi and Mumbai will soon be equipped with anti-drone technology. The decision comes amid rising global military tensions, including the use of drones in modern warfare tactics like "Operation Sindoor." The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is spearheading the project, with a committee from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), including representatives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other relevant stakeholders.
Implementation stages
Project phases and specifications
The project will be implemented in phases, starting with sensitive airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar, and Jammu. A senior officer from the MHA told News18 that "the specifications of the system are being worked upon." Once finalized, procurement for the anti-drone systems will begin. The officer added that models successfully existing at other airports outside India are also being studied for effective implementation.
Safety measures
Security concerns and future plans
The move to install anti-drone systems is largely driven by security concerns after incidents like the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam in April 2025. The escalation between India and Pakistan post this incident saw Indian forces neutralizing threats across the border without entering Pakistani territory. Officials say this has emerged as a major reason for securing airports with anti-drone systems, especially those near international borders.
Security upgrade
Enhancing airport security with anti-drone systems
The decision to install anti-drone systems at major Indian airports is a significant step toward bolstering airport security. With the increasing use of drones in modern warfare, this move will help prevent any possible attacks using rogue drones. The project is being closely monitored by the MHA and BCAS, ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to keep air travel safe from evolving drone threats.
