Mumbai: 85-year-old loses ₹9 crore to fake cops in elaborate scam

India

An 85-year-old South Mumbai resident was tricked out of ₹9 crore by scammers pretending to be police officers.
They convinced him he was caught up in a case involving funds linked to ex-PFI chairman OMA Salam, using fake RBI documents and even a video call with someone dressed as a cop to pressure him.

How the scam unraveled

The fraudsters pushed the victim into cashing out his investments for "verification."
Luckily, a sharp-eyed bank manager in Girgaum spotted another suspicious ₹3 crore transfer and quickly alerted the family and police.
This led cyber cell investigators to arrest Sangram Babar in Satara, who allegedly moved money into fake accounts and is tied to several other online scams.
Legal action is now underway against those involved.
