Mumbai's massive new tunnels promise faster commutes
Mumbai just kicked off its deepest road tunnel project—nearly 10km of twin road tunnels connecting Orange Gate and Marine Drive.
Inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the tunnels aim to shave 15-20 minutes off your drive by December 2028.
The price tag? A hefty ₹8,056 crore.
Smarter routes, less traffic, and heritage saved
These tunnels aren't just about speed—they'll offer a much-needed alternative route to Navi Mumbai Airport for people coming from the western suburbs and central areas.
With most of the stretch running underground (even crossing railways and Metro 3), they'll also link up with the coastal road and Atal Setu.
The best part: around 700 buildings—including several heritage sites—will be spared from demolition, making this a win for both commuters and the city's history.
