NIA arrests gangster Anmol Bishnoi, deported from US
What's the story
Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and a prime accused in the murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique, was deported from the United States to India on Wednesday. He was expelled under new immigration rules introduced by US President Donald Trump. The rules require immediate detention of illegal immigrants after their first asylum or immigration petition is rejected. Upon landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Bishnoi was formally arrested by the NIA.
Expulsion details
Bishnoi's expulsion linked to Trump's immigration rules
From the airport, he was taken directly to the Patiala House Court for further legal proceedings. Bishnoi's expulsion from the US is a direct result of the new immigration rules under Trump. The revised policy mandates immediate detention after the first rejection of asylum or immigration petitions, unlike the previous Biden-era system, which allowed applicants to file fresh petitions while remaining free. This change has expedited deportation timelines from nearly a decade to about 18 months.
Criminal involvement
Bishnoi's role in organized crime and extortion
Bishnoi is accused of being a key handler in cross-border extortion operations. He allegedly coordinated shooters, funded modules, issued threats from abroad, and managed targeted killings through encrypted communication channels. All FIRs against him are with the NIA. He is wanted in India for his involvement in organized crime and extortion cases linked to Lawrence's network. Former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique was shot dead on October 12, 2024, outside his son Zeeshan's office in Bandra
Arrest
Other Indians also deported
Anmol was arrested in California last year and remained in police custody. He was deported along with 199 other Indians. The group also included two fugitives wanted in Punjab and 197 undocumented migrants. According to intelligence agencies, Anmol escaped India in April 2022 using a fake passport, weeks before singer Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead. He is believed to have traveled between the US and Canada using fake Russian documents until he was tracked and arrested.
