Northeast monsoon: Kerala on red alert, schools, colleges shut

India

Kerala's Idukki, Malappuram, and Palakkad districts are on red alert for Wednesday after the IMD predicted heavy rain.
Schools, colleges, and tourist spots in these areas are closed for the day to keep everyone safe from possible landslides and flash floods brought on by the northeast monsoon.

Authorities on high alert as dam is nearly full

The state has paused all mining in these districts and is urging people to avoid hilly areas because of landslide risks.
Meanwhile, the Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki is nearly full, so local agencies are on high alert.
Even with these heavy showers, Kerala has seen 27% less rain than usual this October, thanks to an unpredictable monsoon season.
