Over 18,000 Indians sent back from US since 2009, says Jaishankar
India
India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar shared that 18,822 Indians have been deported from the US since 2009, with 3,258 sent back since January 2025.
He was responding to a question in Parliament about how many Indians have faced deportation recently.
How people are being sent back—and what's being done
Most of these deportations happened on regular flights, but over a thousand people were put on special chartered planes by US authorities.
The government is also stepping up efforts against human trafficking—especially in Punjab and Haryana, where cases of human trafficking and illegal travel agents are high.
After reports of mistreatment during deportations (like Harjit Kaur's case), India has asked the US to ensure fair treatment for everyone going forward.
