Panjab University finally sets dates for long-delayed senate elections

India

After more than a year of waiting, Panjab University (PU) has set the schedule for its much-anticipated senate elections—happening from September 7 to October 4, 2026.
This move, approved by Chancellor C.P. Radhakrishnan, is a big step in bringing back student representation after the last senate term ended in October 2024 and protests erupted over proposed governance changes.

Protests aren't over yet

Even with elections on the horizon, student group PU Bachao Morcha is still out protesting.
They want FIRs against 14 students from earlier protests dropped, new rules on campus elections and activities rolled back, and a committee reviewing Haryana students' representation disbanded.
Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig has been talking with students, urging them to end their demonstrations—but so far, they're holding firm.
