What's the story

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday revealed that he had a telephonic conversation with United States President Donald Trump to discuss the progress of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The two leaders reportedly expressed satisfaction with the continued strengthening of bilateral cooperation in all areas, despite trade tariff tensions. In a post on X, PM Modi said he and Trump discussed both regional and global developments, emphasizing that they will work together for global peace, stability, and prosperity.

Trade discussions

Modi, Trump discuss trade, defense, tech

An official statement revealed that, amid broader trade tariff-related tensions between both countries, PM Modi and Trump stressed the need to keep up the momentum in their efforts to boost bilateral trade. They also discussed enhancing cooperation in key sectors, including technology, energy, defense, and security, among others. Interestingly, the phone call came as two-day trade talks with US negotiators commenced in New Delhi.

Market access

US praises India's market-access offer

As trade talks are underway in New Delhi, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described India as a "tough nut to crack." He acknowledged its resistance to certain American products but said India is now seen as a "viable alternative market." However, he also praised the latest market-access offer as the "best ever" Washington has received from India. The US delegation in New Delhi aims to address remaining friction points, especially regarding American farm goods, meat, and dairy products.

Ongoing negotiations

India-US trade talks progress steadily

The US delegation, headed by Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer, started meetings with India's chief negotiator, Commerce Department Joint Secretary Darpan Jain, on Wednesday. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal is overseeing these negotiations, while Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal noted the talks are progressing steadily toward a bilateral trade agreement. This visit is crucial as both sides aim to finalize the first tranche of a framework trade deal this year.

Tariff imposition

US imposes tariffs on Indian goods

The trade talks come amid rising trade tensions between the US and India. The US had imposed a 25% tariff and an additional 25% penalty on Indian goods over the country's purchase of Russian oil. This combined 50% levy by Washington is among the highest imposed on any partner. Furthermore, earlier this week, President Trump threatened new tariffs on Indian rice in response to complaints of dumping by India, China, and Thailand.
