Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled a 77-foot-tall bronze statue of Lord Ram at the Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt in South Goa. The statue, which is said to be the tallest of its kind in the world, was sculpted by renowned artist Ram Sutar. The unveiling ceremony was part of the 550 years of the mutt's tradition and was attended by several dignitaries, including Goa Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

During the ceremony, PM Modi acknowledged the 550-year-old tradition of Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt and expressed pride in the institution's resilience over the years. "Centuries ago, when this region faced adversity, and people were forced to leave their homes....and seek refuge in new lands, this monastery supported the community, established temples, and shelters in new locations." "Today, from education to hostels...elderly care to assistance to needy families, this monastery has always dedicated its resources to public welfare," he said.

Mutt's 550th anniversary celebrations
The mutt has been a major spiritual center since its establishment at Partagal village in Canacona 370 years ago. The unveiling of the statue comes as part of programs from November 27 to December 7 to celebrate the mutt's 550-year-old tradition. The mutt complex has been modernized for these celebrations, with Public Works Department minister Digambar Kamat saying it retains its spiritual character while being given a modernized look. Organizers expect between 7,000 and 10,000 visitors daily during this period.
