PU protests cause traffic chaos in Chandigarh-Mohali

India

Student protests over delayed senate elections at Panjab University caused major traffic jams in Mohali and Chandigarh on Monday.
Police blocked key roads, forcing drivers onto alternate routes with heavy barricades—making the morning commute anything but smooth.

Students, school busses stranded on roads

Stuck cars, frustrated commuters, and stranded school busses became the norm as traffic piled up on Airport Road, Udyog Path, and nearby streets.
Many took to social media to vent about being stuck for over half an hour, while some students were left waiting outside their schools because busses couldn't get through.

Why are PU students protesting?

The protests started after a government notice announced changes to the university's senate structure.
Even though the notice was withdrawn last week, students kept pushing for proper elections.
Things got tense when protesters broke through campus gates—prompting a mild police lathi-charge and a big security presence around the university.
Only those with ID cards could enter campus as police tried to keep things under control.
