Pune man jailed for kicking out elderly parents

India

A Pune court just sentenced a man to three months in jail and fined him ₹5,000 for evicting his elderly parents from their home.
The case started when an 80-year-old retired officer reported that his younger son took over the family's farmland and forced him out, leading to a complaint under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

Why this matters

Judge Himmatrao Bajad found the younger son guilty of abandoning his parents and breaking a promise about property ownership, while the elder brother was cleared.
The court highlighted how much emotional pain this caused the parents.
By sending the son to Yerwada Central Prison under Section 24 of the Act, the ruling sends a strong message: neglecting or exploiting senior citizens isn't okay—and there are real consequences.
