What's the story

A juvenile court ruled on Wednesday that the 17-year-old boy from Pune who hit two techies with his Porsche and killed them will face charges of drink driving. The court ruled that the teenager will be tried under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertains to drink driving offenses. Initially, a case of culpable homicide was filed against the teen under Section 304, but a court granted him bail within 14 hours due to his minor status.

Bail details

Controversial bail sparks national outrage

The conditions for his release included writing a 300-word essay on accidents, working with traffic police for 15 days, and undergoing counseling for his drinking habit. Prior to the crash, the accused had been celebrating his Class 12 results at a local pub, where he was seen drinking. He was allegedly inebriated and traveling at more than 200 kph when he knocked down Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, both 24, who were riding a motorcycle.

Additional charges

Teen's father and pub owner face charges

The teenager's father, a prominent Pune builder, and the owner of the pub where he was seen drinking are also facing charges. CCTV footage from Cosie bar showed a table crowded with alcohol bottles. The teen reportedly spent ₹48,000 in 90 minutes at one of the two pubs he visited before the accident. Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar earlier stated that the teen will be barred from obtaining a driving license until he turns 25.

Legal actions

Vehicle registration and legal consequences

New development in the case revealed that the car had pending permanent registration due to unpaid fees by the owner. According to Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, the Porsche was imported in March by a dealer in Bengaluru and then transported to Maharashtra after a temporary registration. The vehicle will not be allowed to register at any Regional Transport Office (RTO) for 12 months as its existing temporary registration will be canceled under provisions of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act.

Family

Teen's parents must be punished: Ashwini's mother

Meanwhile, Costa's grieving mother said that the parents of the 17-year-old must be punished. "Just a day before the accident, Ashwini informed me that she would be returning home in Jabalpur...to surprise her father on his birthday. However, it ended this way," Mamata Costa, said. "The parents [of the accused] should be punished for the way they have brought up their child. There should be legal action to ensure such an incident does not happen again," she added.
