Rath Yatra: Women lead Subhadra's chariot pulling in Berhampur
In Berhampur, Odisha, women devotees took center stage by pulling Goddess Subhadra's chariot during the Rath Yatra festival—a tradition unique to this city since 2000.
While men handle the chariots of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, only women get to guide Subhadra's.
This year's 1.5km procession was led by Mayor Sanghamitra Dalai and saw more women joining in than ever before.
Evolving traditions
This isn't just about ritual—it's about making space for women to participate fully and safely in a major festival.
As Panchanan Choudhury from the temple committee noted, interest from women keeps growing each year.
Police even posted women officers near the chariot so everyone could celebrate without worry.
It's a cool reminder that traditions can evolve to include everyone while keeping safety front and center.
