SC steps in to resolve voter list mess in Bengal
The Supreme Court has jumped in to sort out big issues with West Bengal's voter list after the Election Commission said the state didn't provide enough senior officers for the job.
Because of this, less qualified staff had to handle things, which led to a lot of confusion.
The Court's move came on February 20, 2026, using its special powers under Article 142.
Final list showed 61 lakh voters dropped
With nearly 60 lakh voter cases still up in the air, the Supreme Court facilitated the deployment of additional judicial officers from Odisha and Jharkhand to help review and adjudicate documents.
After all this, the final voter list, published on February 28, showed about 61 lakh fewer voters than before (an 8.3% drop).
Pending cases will be sorted through extra lists once judges make their calls, as everyone works toward a fairer election process.
