Tamil Nadu nurses' strike: 723 jobs to be regularized after major protest

India

After five days of protests by over 8,000 nurses in Tamil Nadu, the state government has agreed to regularize 723 nursing jobs by Pongal 2026.
These nurses, hired in 2015 and paid ₹14,000-₹18,000 a month, have been pushing for better job security and pay since their appointment, with renewed protests continuing under the DMK government.

Why it matters

The nurses want the government to keep its promise of creating 8,000 permanent jobs. While over 3,700 positions have already been made permanent since 2021, many feel more needs to be done.
The protest also drew attention after about 750 nurses were arrested—prompting public support and calls for better working conditions from leaders like Anbumani Ramadoss.
For young people considering healthcare careers or following social issues, this is a reminder of how collective action can push governments to act on promises.
