Delhi: Mob vandalizes Chandni Chowk's temple, breaks deity's idols

In a recent incident of communal violence, a temple in Hauz Qazi area of Chandni Chowk, Delhi was vandalized on Sunday night. According to the police, the violence started with a brawl over a parking issue that later transpired into a violent quarrel between two communities. Violence began as two families clashed over scooter parking

According to The Hindu, a fight started between two families over parking of a two-wheeler outside their house in Chawri Bazaar. Videos of the incident surfaced online, purportedly showing a man being thrashed by a group of people, suspected to be drunk, PTI reported. The report added that as the quarrel turned uglier, members of Muslim community vandalized the temple.

On Monday, Delhi MLA Kapil Mishra shared purported videos of the violence which showed a mob vandalizing the temple, shouting slogans "Allah O Akbar" and "Naara E Takbeer," fuelling communal tensions. The videos also show the extent of damage sustained by the temple.

Police action

Police received PCR call; violence erupted before they reached

According to The Hindu, a PCR call received at 11:30 pm on Sunday night, reporting the violent parking dispute between the two families. By the time the police reached the scene, supporters from both sides had gathered a mob. Both parties were then taken to Hauz Qazi police station for further action, Mandeep Singh Randhawa, DCP (central) told the publication.

"We've registered a case into the matter and obtained CCTV footage to identify miscreants who tried to harm communal peace in the area," the DCP told The Hindu, adding that police has been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation. More details are awaited.
