UNICEF report: Obesity now bigger health challenge than malnutrition

India

UNICEF's new "Feeding Profit" report warns that childhood obesity is now a bigger health challenge than malnutrition, with a particular focus on India.
The report points to a steep increase in obesity among kids and teens, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Alarming rise in obesity rates

According to National Family Health Survey data, obesity rates for Indian children under five jumped by 127% between 2005-06 and 2019-21.
If this trend keeps up, over 27 million Indian children and teens could be living with obesity by 2030—making up about 11% of the world's cases.

Mental health impact of obesity

The report also highlights that obesity isn't just about physical health—it can affect mental well-being too.
Many young people face issues like low self-esteem and anxiety, which can put extra pressure on families both emotionally and financially.
