Uttarakhand's UCC to tweak live-in relationship rules: Here's how
Uttarakhand is set to tweak its Uniform Civil Code (UCC) rules for live-in relationships.
On October 15, 2025, the state's Advocate General submitted an affidavit outlining proposed changes to improve the registration and termination process for live-in relationships, and to keep police involvement limited to just record-keeping.
Key changes in the process
If your live-in status gets rejected, you'll now have 45 days (instead of 30) to appeal.
The rules are also getting more flexible with ID—Aadhaar isn't the only option anymore.
Registration is required, and parents will be notified. The updated rules also block registration if either partner is married, underage, or in a prohibited relationship.
These moves aim to streamline the process and ensure kids from live-in relationships get equal property rights, reflecting Uttarakhand's push for fairness across all communities since the UCC kicked in this January.
