While the ritual can technically happen any day, many locals avoid Thursdays because of a belief that sending Goddess Durga off then brings bad luck—she's seen as a daughter, and Thursday departures are thought to disrupt prosperity linked to Goddess Lakshmi.

Heavy rain expected today

To make things trickier, the weather isn't cooperating. The India Meteorological Department expects heavy rain today—up to 115mm—which could mean flooding in Kolkata and nearby districts.
