Ashwini Kumar Choubey is a senior politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Bihar. He has done his BSc (Hons.) in Zoology from Patna University and was the President of the University students’ union in 1978-79. An RSS Swayamsevak since childhood, Choubey served as a member in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) between 1974 and 1987. He participated in the JP movement of the 1970s, going to jail under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). Choubey was a five-time member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Bhagalpur constituency between 1995 and 2014, and served as the Minister of Urban Development and Health in the Nitish Kumar-led JDU-BJP Government. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Choubey was victorious from the Buxar constituency and served as the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Health & Family Welfare (2017-19) in the Modi Government. He was re-elected from Buxar in the 2019 General Elections and retained his ministry. After the 2021 Cabinet reshuffle, Choubey was appointed as the MoS for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution and Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
