Take up development work if you want: Shivakumar to Kiran
What's the story
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has responded to Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw's criticism of Bengaluru's infrastructure. The billionaire entrepreneur had earlier expressed her concerns over poor road conditions and garbage management in the city, citing a foreign business visitor's remarks during a tour of Biocon Park. In response, Shivakumar suggested that Mazumdar-Shaw could take up the development work herself if she wanted. "If she wants to develop them (roads), let her do it," he said.
Development plans
₹50 crore allocated for Bengaluru's development
Shivakumar also spoke about the funds allocated for Bengaluru's development. He said that ₹50 crore has been earmarked for the city's development from tax revenues. "Bengaluru city generates ₹6,000 crore in taxes... We have allocated funds for the development of this region," he said. The Deputy CM also encouraged citizens to report issues directly to him and assured action against corrupt officials. "If anyone demands a bribe, I have instructed that they be suspended by this evening."
Ongoing efforts
Infrastructure improvement work underway, says Priyank Kharge
Responding to Mazumdar-Shaw's comments, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge said infrastructure improvement work is underway. He said the city is growing rapidly, and necessary steps are being taken for its development. "I am not sure which part of Bengaluru they have seen... We are growing at a rapid pace, and whatever is necessary for the infrastructure improvement, we are doing it," he added.
Criticism response
Minister MB Patil responds to Mazumdar-Shaw's criticism
Karnataka Minister MB Patil also acknowledged Mazumdar-Shaw's contributions to the state but said her criticism was not in "good taste." He added that development work is ongoing and urged patience as improvements are made. Earlier, Shaw had posted about "an overseas business visitor to Biocon Park who said ' Why are the roads so bad and why is there so much garbage around? Doesn't the Govt want to support investment?"
