What's the story

Election flying squads in Chennai have seized a total of ₹1.55 crore in two separate incidents this week. The first incident took place on Tuesday near the Light House when a Cash Management System (CMS) vehicle was intercepted by the flying squad team. The vehicle was found to be carrying ₹1.47 crore, which its occupants claimed was for replenishing ATM kiosks.

Seizure details

Cash will be released after proper verification

Despite the occupants' claims, election authorities decided to seize both the vehicle and cash. The seized items were later secured at the Marina police station. Officials from the Chepauk Assembly constituency's Election authorities and Income Tax officials were informed about this development. The release of the cash will only happen after proper verification of documents establishing its source and purpose.

Second seizure

Passenger claimed he was carrying money to give it

The second incident occurred on Monday at Perambur railway station, where Railway Protection Force personnel seized ₹8.39 lakh from a passenger named Noor Mohammad. Mohammad, a 42-year-old resident of Ennore, claimed he worked for a company that handled wholesale biryani orders and was carrying the money to give it to shop owners. The seized amount was later handed over to Thiru Vi Ka Nagar election flying squad official James Samuel.
