Hukum Singh: News

War hero, lawyer, politician...Hukum Singh played different roles in life before the curtain finally fell on his celebrated life. He lived his life on his terms and never shied away from speaking his mind. Hukum Singh was born on April 5, 1938, in Kairana, Uttar Pradesh, in a Gurjar family. He graduated in law from Allahabad University. Although he cleared the judicial services exam, he chose to join the army instead of being a judge. Singh was a Captain in the Indian Army during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. After voluntarily retiring from the army in 1969, he began his law practice in Muzaffarnagar. Singh's first rendezvous in electoral politics was in 1974 when he won from the Kairana constituency and became an MLA. He represented Kairana in Uttar Pradesh seven times. Although he began his political career with the Indian National Congress, he switched to Bharatiya Janata Party in 1996. Singh punched his ticket to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2014 after winning from the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency. He was known for his active participation in debates regarding issues that affected the people like agriculture, infrastructure, and education. Hukum Singh came into the limelight for the wrong reasons when he was named in an FIR related to the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013. He died due to severe respiratory illness on February 3, 2018, in Noida.
