What's the story

The recent cancellation of around 500 flights by IndiGo has sparked a debate in the Rajya Sabha. Congress member Pramod Tiwari raised concerns over the airline's monopoly and its impact on both parliamentarians and the general public. Speaking during Zero Hour, Tiwari highlighted that many MPs had planned their weekend travel around these flights.

Tiwari said, "On one issue, many are concerned, and you will also agree with me. One airline, IndiGo, has canceled 500 flights yesterday (Thursday) and the day before yesterday (Wednesday)." He pointed out that many members had booked flights to return home on Friday and come back on Monday, but are now facing difficulties.

Government inquiry

Tiwari questions government's response to airline monopoly

Tiwari also questioned if the government was taking any steps to address the issue. He said, "The problem has arisen due to the monopoly of one airline. I want to request through you the minister in charge who has made this rule due to which the problem has arisen, and update the House when the problem will be addressed. Is the government taking any steps?"

Official response

Parliamentary Affairs Minister assures investigation into cancelations

In response to Tiwari's concerns, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju assured that the government is looking into the matter. "Before coming to the House, I spoke to the Civil Aviation Minister. The government is considering the technical problems the airline faces," Rijiju said. He also said that both Parliament and citizens need to be kept informed about this situation.
