Poonam Mahajan is an Indian politician who represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is serving as the Member of Parliament from Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency. Mahajan is serving as the Chair of the Maharashtra State Animal Welfare Board, as of 2021. She is the daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan and her elder brother is Rahul Mahajan. Previously, Mahajan has served as the National President of Bharatiya Yuva Morcha from 2016-2020. She was also the first female to become the President of the Basketball Federation of India. In 2006, Mahajan started her political career by becoming a primary member of the BJP. In 2007, she became the General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and in 2010, she was appointed as the National Vice President of the youth wing. Mahajan has been involved with resolving all issues related to animal welfare and rights. She also contributes to issues related to environmental protection and conservation. Mahajan is credited for introducing private member’s bills to benefit children, senior citizens, sex workers, women, and animals. She was also appointed as a mentor and patron to Swachhalay and in 2016, she founded Mumbai Youth Forum.
