13 new bush frog species discovered in Northeast India

Technology

Scientists just found 13 new bush frog species in Northeast India—the biggest leap for Indian wildlife discoveries in over a decade.
The team collected frogs from 81 different spots across eight states between 2016 and 2024.

Frogs found all over the Northeast

Six of these new frogs turned up in Arunachal Pradesh, three in Meghalaya, and one each in Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur.
Researchers used everything from DNA tests to frog calls (yes, really) to make sure these were truly new species.
They even checked museum collections to update what we know about where these frogs live.

Why it matters for the future

This discovery fills big gaps in what we know about amphibians from this region.
But there's a catch: deforestation and farming are threatening these unique frogs' homes.
The study is a reminder that protecting their habitats now is more important than ever if we want to keep discovering—and saving—species like these.
