Amazon builds data and infrastructure to challenge OpenAI and Anthropic
Amazon is gearing up to be a major player in AI in the coming year.
Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis admits its current models aren't leading yet, but says it is laying the groundwork with strong data, architecture, and infrastructure.
The big goal? Compete with giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Amazon centers on Bedrock Nova2 chips
Amazon's strategy centers on Bedrock, a marketplace for AWS users to pick from various AI models, and Nova2, its own model launched in December that already has 50,000 users.
It is also betting big on custom Trainium and Graviton chips to make AI run faster and more efficiently.
DeSantis notes that integrating chip design with model development is crucial for speeding up progress: "If the chips are not telling the model designers what capabilities are coming and where they can optimize, then we're not doing the science necessary to take advantage of those capabilities until the chips are available, and then you're waiting months and months."
