Apple now lets Japanese iPhone users swap Siri for Alexa or Gemini

Technology

Apple's latest iOS 26.2 beta lets people in Japan replace Siri with other voice assistants like Google Gemini or Amazon Alexa.
It's the first time Apple has opened up its Side button to rivals, but for now, it's just for Japanese devices and accounts.

How it works

Developers need to update their apps to support Side-button activation so users can launch a third-party assistant instantly by pressing the Side button—no waiting around.
Some core iPhone controls, though, will still only work with Siri.

Why is Apple doing this?

This move helps Apple comply with Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act Guidelines, which impose requirements around competition and interoperability.
Allowing users to pick their assistant may increase competition on iPhones in Japan.

Could this go global?

There are hints this feature might come to Europe next under similar digital laws.
If all goes well in Japan, swapping out Siri could become an option for more iPhone users worldwide.
