ChatGPT's growth slows as rivals like Gemini surge

ChatGPT is still the biggest AI chatbot out there, holding half of global mobile downloads and over half of active users as of November 2025.
But its growth has slowed down—active users only went up 6% in the last few months, while Google's Gemini jumped by 30%, thanks to its new Nano Banana image tool.
Gemini is quickly catching up, especially with more people using it on Android devices.

What's next for ChatGPT?

While ChatGPT saw an 85% jump in downloads this year, it's being outpaced by competitors like Perplexity and Gemini, who grew even faster.
OpenAI isn't sitting still though—CEO Sam Altman told staff they're focusing on making ChatGPT more personal and reliable.
