Chennai gets tech-driven flood forecasting system

Technology

Chennai has launched a new tech-driven flood forecasting system (RTFF & SDSS) to help predict river levels and street flooding before it happens.
This ₹107.2 crore project is designed to make urban flooding less of a headache in neighborhoods like Pulianthope, Nungambakkam, and Velachery.

How the system works

Covering 4,974 sq km—including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet—the system operates under the technical oversight of IIT-Madras and with support from the World Bank.
Forecasts go straight to disaster management teams and are shared with the public through the TN-Alert app.
Teams from multiple city departments work together to keep everyone better prepared—especially during monsoon season.
