EU to decide if Apple's ads, maps are 'gatekeeper services'

Technology

The European Commission is reviewing whether Apple Ads and Apple Maps should be labeled as "gatekeeper services" under the Digital Markets Act—a move that would mean tougher rules on data use, openness, and fair access.
The Commission has 45 working days from November 27, 2025, to make its decision.

Why does it matter?

Apple says its Ads has minimal share compared to giants like Google and Meta, and argues Maps isn't a big player in Europe.
If the EU sides with Apple, these services dodge strict new rules for now. But if not, Apple will have just six months to comply—potentially shaking up how these apps work for users and businesses across the EU.
