What's the story

Google is making its popular navigation app, Google Maps, more interactive and user-friendly. The company has announced a redesign of the app, powered by its advanced Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The new features will provide a hands-free experience, making Google Maps act like an intelligent co-passenger who can guide drivers to their destinations while also suggesting nearby places to eat, shop or sightsee.

Improved precision

AI to improve accuracy of directions

Gemini AI will also improve the accuracy of Google Maps by using landmarks as reference points for turns, instead of relying solely on distance indicators. This way, users will get more precise directions. The information used by Gemini comes from a database of around 250 million places on Google Maps, built over two decades through user reviews and contributions. It can also be used to report traffic disruptions in a conversational manner.

Feature replacement

Gemini replaces Google Assistant

Gemini AI is now replacing Google Assistant in the navigation feature of Google Maps on Android and iOS devices. Users will see a Gemini icon in the top-right corner of their screens, which they can tap or activate with the "Hey Google" hotword. This new feature lets users ask questions about their trip, such as nearby restaurants, popular dishes, and parking availability.

Task support

Support for Android Auto and CarPlay in the works

Gemini AI can also assist users with multi-step tasks, such as finding a budget-friendly vegan restaurant along their route and adding calendar events for future appointments. The navigation feature with Gemini will be rolled out to the Google Maps app on Android and iOS in the coming weeks. Android Auto support is also planned through an upcoming Gemini experience, while Google is exploring its compatibility with CarPlay.
