Gemini can now analyze Gmail, Drive for deep research queries
What's the story
Google has announced a major update to its Gemini Deep Research feature, allowing it to access information from Gmail and Google Chat as well as Google Drive files. This new capability lets the AI model draw context from these sources and incorporate it directly into research reports. Previously, Gemini could only search the web or any PDFs uploaded with prompts.
Feature overview
Gemini Deep Research generates reports on various topics
Gemini Deep Research is a specialized feature designed to generate research reports, not just answer questions. It begins by creating a multi-step research plan and then conducts several web searches to compile a report. Users can modify this report with additional information or export it as a Google Doc or an AI-generated podcast. The new integration with Workspace products allows users to conduct market analyzes and competitor reports using data from their Gmail, Drive, and Chat accounts.
User options
How to use Gemini Deep Research
When "Deep Research" is selected on Gemini's prompt bar, users can choose from four options: a regular Google Search, Gmail, Drive, or Chat. This means that emails in Gmail, documents/slides/sheets/PDFs in Drive and chat logs (if using Google Chat) will provide context for Google's AI model. The feature is currently available on desktop but will be rolled out to mobile devices in the coming days.
