What's the story

Google Photos has launched its annual '2025 Recap,' a feature that highlights users' most memorable moments from the year. The recap offers a personalized collection of photos and memories along with cinematic visuals and graphics to summarize the last 12 months at a glance. This year, Google is letting users hide select photos and people from their recap for a more tailored experience.

User control

Recap feature's availability and customization options

The 2025 Recap feature is available on both Android and iOS platforms. It can be accessed by heading to the Google Photos app and tapping on 'Photos.' The recap will be displayed in the memories carousel. Google has also integrated a new option with CapCut, allowing users to export their recap directly into the photo and video editing app for further customization.

AI integration

Google Photos recap: A blend of nostalgia and AI

First launched in 2024, the Google Photos Recap feature leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance user experience. This year, it is being used as a testing ground for Gemini, Google's advanced AI model. The company says that Gemini can understand the context of photos to extract more details and highlight users' "one true passion" along with four other highlights that "made your year."

User guidance

Recap feature's accessibility and regeneration

Google Photos will notify users when their recap is ready. The recap will be pinned to the Collections tab for the whole of December, before moving to the main photo grid under December. Users who have taken enough photos during the year will be eligible for a full recap. They also need to use the latest version of the app and enable Face Groups setting in order to access this feature.
