Implant helps blind people see again after decades
A new study in 2025 found that the PRIMA retinal implant can bring back central vision for adults with advanced dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Tested on 38 people with very poor eyesight, 81% saw real improvement within a year.
Patients used special glasses to see
Patients in the PRIMAvera trial used glasses with a built-in camera and infrared projector, which sent signals to the implant.
This setup let them read letters, numbers, and even longer text—most could read at least 10 more letters on an eye chart than before.
Implant offers hope for millions
The PRIMA implant is the first to restore reading vision for people with untreatable dry AMD.
By working around damaged cells and activating what's left in the retina, it offers hope for more independence and a better quality of life for those living with this tough condition.
