India just leveled up its supercomputing game

Technology

India's National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) has rolled out 37 new supercomputers, bringing the country's total computing power to a hefty 40 petaflops.
This upgrade is set to boost everything from scientific research and startups to college projects and industry innovation.
The NSM, launched back in 2015 by MeitY and DST, is all about making high-performance computing more accessible across India.

Homegrown tech powering big ideas

These new systems are part of the "PARAM Rudra" series, built with Indian-designed server boards and software.
Over 13,000 researchers and 1,700 PhD scholars from 260 institutions are already tapping into this network for work on AI, drug discovery, climate modeling, astrophysics—you name it.
So far, NSM machines have handled over one crore compute jobs and helped publish more than 1,500 international research papers.

Supercomputers everywhere—and more coming soon

You'll find these machines at top institutes like IISc Bengaluru and various IITs.
They feature fast homegrown tech—think high-speed data transfers (up to 100 Gbps) and smart cooling systems.
Plus, six more supercomputers are on the way with a ₹680 crore investment to make sure even more students and researchers get access.
