India just revealed Matsya 6000, its 1st crewed deep-sea sub

Technology

India has officially introduced Matsya 6000, the country's first submersible designed to take people deep underwater.
Announced by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, this project puts India in the league of nations exploring the ocean's most mysterious depths.
Built by the National Institute of Ocean Technology for the Deep Ocean Mission, Matsya 6000 is set for its first crewed dive at 500 meters in 2026 and aims to reach an impressive 6,000 meters by 2027.

Why it matters: Tech, science, and big ocean goals

Matsya 6000 can carry three people way down into the sea and is packed with cool tech—think high-density batteries and underwater comms.
It was recently shown off at IISF 2025 as a symbol of India's science game leveling up.
Beyond being a tech feat, this sub could help us understand marine life and open new frontiers in the blue economy.
