Indian Railways launches world's 1st hydrogen-powered train
Technology
Indian Railways has completed manufacturing its first-ever hydrogen-powered train, which is ready for trials, as stated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
This is a pilot project to see how hydrogen fuel can work for trains in India, with a special facility in Jind set to make green hydrogen using electrolysis.
Why it matters
This isn't just any train—it's the world's longest and most powerful hydrogen train on broad-gauge tracks, packing 10 coaches and 2400 kW of power.
Built entirely in India under the Atmanirbhar Bharat push, it runs clean: zero CO2 emissions, only water vapor left behind.
It's a big step toward greener travel and cutting Indian Railways's carbon footprint.
