Indian startup Astrobase aims for 2029 rocket launch with next-gen engine
Technology
Astrobase, an Indian startup launched in 2024, is building an advanced methane-powered rocket engine and plans its first orbital launch by 2029.
Their tech uses liquid oxygen and methane—just like SpaceX's Raptor—for better efficiency, signaling India's growing ambitions in commercial spaceflight.
Smarter engine design for reusability
Astrobase's engine features separate preburners for fuel and oxidizer, which helps cut down on heat stress and boosts the engine's lifespan.
After a successful hot-fire test in September 2025, they're gearing up for full-scale trials in 2026.
The goal? A reusable medium-lift rocket that echoes SpaceX's Falcon 9—making launches more sustainable and cost-effective for India's growing space scene.
