    Mercedes-Benz' remodeled 2019 G-Class gets modern features

    What's the story

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new 2019 G550 car at the Detroit Auto Show in Michigan.

While the remodeled G-Wagen still retains its vintage look and classic feel, the car has also come to sport some much-needed contemporary features.

More of a style statement than a utility vehicle, it remains the most sought after SUV by Mercedes' up-market customers.

    Features

The car has new digital displays with old analogue theme

The retro-looking car features a new pair of 12.3-inch digital displays in a widescreen panel, with the added delight of the main display retaining the default theme of round analogue dials.

    It has a 4.0 L turbocharged V8 engine.

Notably, the car is missing Mercedes' newest infotainment system, called MBUX, with voice assistant support.

    Looks

2019 G-Class has polished interior, more leg room

The interior of the boxy vehicle features high-quality stitched leather. Further, its air vents are large enough to be operated with gloved hands.

The 2019 G-Class is longer by 2.1 inches and wider by 4.8 inches than the old model, meaning more leg room at the back.

The car's pricing hasn't been announced yet, but keep in mind the outgoing model starts at $123,600.

    Details

The original G-Class was intended as a military vehicle

Like the original vehicle, the car possesses off-roading capabilities that can be operated via a system called G-Mode which changes the car's steering throttle and shocks to suit a rough ride.

The not-so-widely used feature reinforces the rugged image of the original G-Wagen. First introduced in 1979, the car was intended as a tough vehicle for the military.
